Andreas Jaeggi: "Paris / Corner of the Louvre at Rue de Rivoli" Top: Pencil, Oil Pastel & Acrylic on Heavy Paper, 14" x 14" Bottom from Left to Right: Pencil, Oil Pastel & Acrylic on Heavy Paper, 14" x 14" Oil on Canvas, 24" x 24" Preparatory Photo Collage in Black and White 2012
I regularly compare photographic "truth" with my own reality – the way I perceive my surroundings through painting. Whenever I am walking to my working place, the National Opera of Paris / Bastille, and approach this corner section of Napoleon's square building fronting the Louvre museum on Rue de Rivoli, my steps always slow down. I am forever fascinated by this particular view. The painted picture demonstrates how my eye simplifies the variety of architectural clutter; the photo is the "Click!"-truthfulness of the camera eye, although this is not entirely correct as the photo collage heightens the pyramiding perspective.
