Olga's Question:

Olga's Frage:

"Dear Andreas, I always admire your paintings and objects. You use a wide range of colors and techniques which are so fascinating. My question is very simple. Andreas, where does your inspiration come from?"

Andreas, woher nimmst Du Deine Inspiration?"

Andreas' Antwort:

"Dear Olga, it is possible that looking at my visual work could lead quite naturally to this question. But first of all, let me state that for about a century now, referring to what is still called "contemporary" and "modern" art, neither talent, inspiration, craftsmanship nor professionalism, etc. have any meaning regarding the success of an artist. On the contrary, quite different elements now play an essential role. A first example would be the loudly trumpeted political and critically social convictions. Of course, one MUST be for breaking through the sea blockade in the Mediterranean Sea in order to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip, and it is equally EVIDENT that in the pre-Christmas time, one automaticlly gives money to fight against the hunger of African toddlers. It goes without saying that, participating in a gigantic pop concert would actually be the best way to do that. (One of the greatest composers of this past "contemporary" century and whose works belong to the group of most often performed pieces up to and including today, Richard Strauss, would never have stood a chance as a visual artist due to his political convictions. One would never have accepted the tiniest sketch from him, on the contrary: the opponents of globalisation would have camped in front of the little entrance gate to his front garden and the Art professionals would have indiscreetly hushed him up.) A second example would be, either in addition too the preceding or standing quite alone, a certain life style. As evidenced by, the staged poverty of Picasso in the second half of his life or Andy Warhol's rock'n'roll-drugs-and-sex parties with his Factory = he was even too lazy to produce his own works himself, a very common method to produce "Art" nowadays, by the way. One further element is the recognizability of the artist's style or motifs (in the way of brand names and products like Coca-Cola). "One" wants to be able to see "it" immediately and art owners fervently wish to pronounce loudly to the world: "What hangs there over my fire place is a Dubuffet!" ... What I am trying to say is that the artistic quality of the work (and this strangely enough only in the visual arts) has become of second-, even of third-rate importance for about the last 100 years. Very different points, as I mentioned very far above, are important for the qualitative estimation of a work of art and its consequently being placed into the hit parade of contemporary art history.
But then again, all of these Art professionals are perhaps right: what has been valid as high artistic standards since the cave paintings of Lascaux and lasting over thousands of years has – since the beginning of the last century – become no longer functionable.

So, dear Olga, I now come back to your question as to from where I take my inspiration: from nowhere. I also have no fantasy whatsoever. Motifs are literally pushed upon me unendingly and with such insistance until I finally bring myself to translate them visually. As I react to my own personal influences which are then reflected in my work, I have a very different "problem" than the search for sources or moments of inspiration: there are not enough hours in the day to realize all the projects collected in my head."
