These illustrations executed to accompany Werner Bergengruen's short story "The Mason and the Capsule" (the Thirteenth Piece from the Book Rodenstein) were part of my graduation work at the end of the Gymnasium in the courses for Drawing & Art. (The end of Gymnasium corresponds to the end of the second semester at a US university. In Switzerland, testing and "possible" graduation takes place at this point before one is allowed to move on to university level studies.) I was nineteen then. The pictures are etchings which have then been hand colored with color pencils. I wrote the text of the tale by hand in calligraphic ink writing (here is the title page as an example). By the way, I did pass the exam.
